One of the most famous places in New York City has interesting history, which not many people aware of. Times Square seems always crowded by tourists and filled with lots of family-entertainment shops. However, it used to be filled with go-go dancers and prostitutes about 20 to 30 years ago. This fact motivated me to study about history of Times Square and make a book of it.
I did not want the book look so typical history books, which have very organized texts and pictures separately. I wanted texts and pictures harmonized on each pages that convey the messages efficiently. From 1890s to 1940s, most pictures are black and white, and after that eras are color. It was a big task for me to make these pictures to have a coherent style. Therefore, I colored those black and white pictures with vivid colors as they look like a graphic elements. The whole design concept is focused on collage effect. Pictures are from history book or articles that represent that era such as fashion, monuments, signages, and architectures. During the whole motion playing, it panned according to the line that indicates time line. At the end, when the camera zoom-out, the time line is formed as a square. I got this idea of square from the name “Times Square”. I also want audience to interpret it as repetition of history: introduction - development - turn - conclusion.
