Riptide is a platform hosting visually interactive, musical landscapes. The artist designs a visual aesthetic in complements to the music consisting of clips, effects, and other graphic elements creating an immersive experience the user can endlessly manipulate and explore. This non-narrative approach to the music’s visual component allows for a completely unique experience every time for the user.
The visuals are interacted with consciously and unconsciously. A simple tablet app consisting of multiple trigger buttons allows the listener to interact consciously. A bracelet interpreting heart rate allows for unconscious interaction. The interactivity establishes a connection between artist and listener as they create something truly original together.
The example presented here was designed for my own musical project, Flyover. The exploration of duality and the underlying complexity of things is the conceptual force behind the album and the accompanying visuals are designed in support of this.
Throughout this project I greatly expanded upon my technical abilities. I utilized the Processing library along with pure Java for the interactive elements. I also manipulated MIDI signals typically used to drive audio based applications into driving graphics generation instead.
