Tappan Zee Bridge Pedestrian Path

  • For this group project, we were tasked with designing the pedestrian and cyclist experience for the new Tappan Zee Bridge.  Specific to this bridge, we had to consider protection from the elements, cars, and the drop.

  • In order to utilize the bridge’s 3 mile length as benefit, we designed the pathway as not just a way to get from one point to another but as a destination that users would seek out soley for recreation and enjoyment as well as trasit.  We created unique spaces along the length of the bridge to alow for respite and gathering
  • The path had to include protection from the sun and wind, as well as from the drop.  Sun and wind protection took the form of large undulating overhangs that also added visual interest for pedestrians and cyclists.  Two types of fence protected users from the edge.  Each type considers the balance between protection and preserving the view off the bridge.
  • Bridging between two communities and right in the middle of the Hudson Valley’s most popular recreatinoal cycling route required us to consider traffic management for pedestrians and cyclists.  We utilized visual indicators as well as surface texture changes to help differentiate between use lans without detracting from the user experience.
