SPLASH
In this studio, we were to design a kiosk structure to be placed in the middle strip of the 16th Street Mall in Denver, Colorado. Existing conditions such as vehicular traffic, pedestrian traffic, surveillance, maintenance, what users of the space think, and how successful the existing kiosks are, were thoroughly analyzed.
A radical idea of placing a pool in the middle of the outdoor mall strip was explored. Different types of pool activities were put into the space to accommodate for the different user groups found on the site. The differing pool areas can be changed depending on the differing seasons. The beach pool can be used as an outdoor theater, the diving well can be used as an ice skating rink, a Christmas tree farm can be placed along the boardwalk, etc. The kiosks relate to the current use of the site. During pool use, the kiosks can be used as changing stalls, equipment rental, food, etc. During the winter season, the kiosks can be used as ice skate rental booths, hot chocolate vendors, etc.
